What Instagram TV means for video
The launch of Instagram TV, or IGTV for short, opens up a whole new set of possibilities for brands trying to connect with their social media audiences. With the option to produce and publish both horizontal and vertical videos up to 60 minutes in length, businesses now have the opportunity to communicate their key messages, or examples of their work, in longer form.
With over 1 billion monthly users, Instagram shows no signs of slowing down. From the early days of simple photo posting to Stories, vertical video and now IGTV, the photo and video-sharing app has consistently adapted to consumer needs, introducing features that reflect wider trends.
Video is now well and truly here to stay – in the United States alone, more video content is uploaded in 30 days than the major TV networks have created in 30 years. Over half of this is viewed on mobile, with 92% of mobile consumers sharing videos with others. Most interestingly, video on social networks generates 1200% more shares than text and images combined. 1
With the launch of IGTV, we expect those numbers to only increase. The new feature exists within the current Instagram app, but will also be rolled out as a stand-alone application. Because of this, many are labeling it a direct competitor to Youtube, as it addresses many of the video-sharing app’s problems.
IGTV will remove the need to rotate your phone to view horizontal video and arrange content based on Instagram’s interest-specific algorithm. Therefore, consumers won’t need to go through the process of searching – the right videos should be front and centre.
However, with increased access comes an expectation of quality. We expect Stories to be a medium for everyday moments, where live and unedited video can be shared with the world. On the other hand, consumers of IGTV will expect high-quality video production; well-thought-out pieces of content that inspire, educate or entertain.
With so much potential, IGTV is expected to herald a new age in video production. Businesses now have the opportunity to connect with their audiences in yet another way, increasing awareness and hopefully, profitability.
