When the average consumer hears ‘video social media’, generally the first thing that comes to mind is YouTube. Partly responsible for making videos accessible, the film-based phenomenon makes it incredibly easy to upload whatever you want to the World Wide Web.

While the video landscape has expanded to not only include YouTube, it still remains one of the Internet’s most important websites. Therefore, we thought we’d take a look at just how consumers and businesses are using it for success.

American business Cloudswave has collated a number of insights and statistics on YouTube, each of which have been chosen to help businesses take advantage of the medium’s popularity and hopefully produce something worth watching.

Most pertinently, the top 100 leading advertisers in the US run daily campaigns on YouTube, with the top 500 brand channels average nearly 900,000 views each month. If you’re thinking, ‘meh, an episode of TV gets way more than that’, think again – YouTube reaches the 18-34 age bracket more so than cable TV, meaning that the reach is much more effective. In recognition of this effectiveness, businesses are increasing their digital spend, with the latest figures from 2017 sitting at $8.05 billion.

When looking at the top brands and channels on YouTube, it’s clear that something’s working! The top brands average nearly 100,000 views per video and have 35,000 subscribers per channel.

What’s more, the top 1000 channels make (on average) $23,000USD in advertising revenue and generate 350 social interactions for every minute of video. Considering that consumers spent 6 billion hours watching YouTube videos, these huge numbers are no surprise.

So what does this mean for the average Melbourne business? It’s time for a YouTube channel. We know video is one of the most effective ways to reach your audience, adding trust, confidence and curiosity to your brand message. With unprecedented sharing abilities and an ever-expanding audience, there’s no reason not to get involved.
